The Sturgeon River Slough

Spring came late, but it finally came.  It's always a treat to get out to the Sturgeon Slough to see migrating waterfowl.

Trumpeter Swans

White Pelican. These huge birds fly with stately grace, and in formation when in a group.

Portage Lake Canal

Coffee Break

Evening Calm

We saw our friend again on the way back.  Note the large "keel" on it's upper bill, the mark of a breeding male.

Sandhill cranes.  Grey now, but in a few weeks brown.  They deliberately stain their plumage with decaying vegetation, evidently as camouflage.  Who told them to do so?

Nothing like a sunset paddle on a sheet of glass.

Sandhills.
